Description

Marking the largely submerged rock formation known as Bush Island, Sunken Rock is a little workhorse of a lighthouse built in 1847, and still in service today.  The tiny island is fully occupied by the lighthouse and a boathouse.  It is situated in the St. Lawrence River half a mile north of the town of Alexandria Bay, NY, and within sight of the famous Boldt Castle. This was an early work for me in that I had seen this lighthouse many times but never painted it. I knew it would be far more interesting with a ship next to it, so I had to place the ship in the image so it looked as though it was there. Its popular motif for many river painters but it seems there is always room for one more.
