Description

Each July the town of Sackets Harbor holds a plein air competition. In 2021 I entered the event. Looking for a subject that befit the town and its history, I came upon the stone bridge where President James Monroe was greeted by the survivors of the revolution on August 4th 1817. He was saluted with 19 guns upon his arrival in the town. It took some doing but I was able to get my gear right down by the water for this view. I took time out to have my lunch and sit there imagining that day in 1817. It must have quite an honor for the soldiers to meet the president.

This painting, done in line and watercolor, has been mounted on a panel, sealed, and varnished with a UV protectant. This eliminates the need for matting and glass.
